Running Log Week July 25th – Running in Full Bloom of Summer!
Can I complain anymore how hard it is to run in this heat right now? The humidity is so high I’m almost swimming through my runs. I had to stop 2 of my runs this week, because the air was so moist and thick it was hard to breath. Through most runs this week I really lower my pace so I can make it through some decent mileage, while this humidity is in full drive. Even during the early evening hours there isn’t much relief at this point. I try to keep in mind that hopefully all this hard work will pay off during for the Fall races.
Hydration has been key for the last few weeks, even more so than usual. Regular water intake just isn’t cutting it. I need to replenish with sports drink and coconut water before and after my runs. I know right away when I suffer from electrolyte depletion. I get light headed, my muscles feel weak and tired and I have an overall fatigue feeling. When I get home from a run my clothes are dripping with sweat – so essential to replenish all the fluids in asap.
Anyways, here s how my hot and sweaty running week went:
Monday: This was one of the runs I need to cut short due to the heat. I planned on running 6 miles, but I stopped after 3 miles. The heat index was just too high. If it feels hard to walk in these temps than running for sure isn’t a great idea.
Tuesday: Night run around my neighborhood. When I went outside for my evening run it was still 86 degrees. I remember how hard those first 3 miles felt. I had a veggie burger for dinner, which made the run even harder. It’s so much better to run with only a light snack in your tummy. Something happened in mile 3 though – after those first 3 miles I got all energized and the run felt so much easier. I was able to finish 6 miles. Felt so good! Sleeping is hard though after late night runs like this. Your body is so pumped up and your sleep feels restless.
Wednesday: No running.
Thursday: 6 miles at the gym. It was burning hot outside throughout the entire day and I knew better not to even try running outside. So I headed over to my gym for 6 miles on the treadmill.
Friday: 3 miles around my community in the morning. Another run which I needed to stop after 3 miles. Did I mention already that it was hot?
Saturday: No Running. Pool time with my kids, which in itself was a workout, too!
Sunday: 5 miles early in the morning. I was running during sunrise. I forgot to bring my sunglasses. The sun was so strong I was barely able to see anything in front of me. When I started out running the temperature felt okay, but it quickly turned and it started to get really hot in mile 4. I pushed for one more mile and threw in the towel after 5 miles. I was done and ready to go home! 🙂
Total Mileage for this week: 23 miles It was still a good running running considering all the obstacles climate-wise.
How was your running week?
