I think August is passing by even faster than July did. It feels like I wrote last week’s training log only 3 days ago.

This last week has really been slow for me running wise. The kids were both off from camp and school didn’t start until this week, so yes, they needed my attention full time, non-stop.

They are at the age now when the second they get up they burst with energy and can’t wait to get outside and be active. So we had a lot of playground and beach time all of last week – pretty much just about anything that curbs their energy. I have to admit at the end of the day I didn’t miss running as much as I usually do when I didn’t run. I was worn out! Playing basketball and frisbee in 90 plus degree takes a toll on your energy.

And yes, all I wanted when we got home was a popsicles or ices just like my kids. It all was great though. I always feel melancholic when Summer is about to end, so I try to take in the sun and outdoor time as much as I can.

As I am writing this my rascals are back in school today and the house feels awkwardly quiet.

I actually miss all the noise, can you believe it?

 

Anyway,

Here is how my  running week went:

Monday: 6 miles. This was some run. It stormed all day, actually for the last 2 days and in the late afternoon it looked like it had finally all cleared up. So I headed out the door for a 6 Miler. 10 Minutes into my run it started drizzling and about 15 minutes later down pouring. I kept on running anyway hoping it would stop soon, like most of the rain in Florida. I was already too far from the house in order to turn around.  Luckily the rain got much lighter after a little while. Suddenly I saw a lot of black little things on the ground. At first I thought it was some sort of fruit that fell of the trees, but as I kept on running these black little things started hopping and as I stopped I noticed that these were tiny little baby frogs. So many! More and more were showing up along the route. After less than 50 m I must have past thousands! It was a frog migration. I quickly took my phone out in order to take pics for my boys when the rain started down pouring again. I had to put my phone back into my belt, to save it from water damage. I couldn’t really capture the size of this huge frog migration. Too bad! It really was something else to see. I changed to the other side of the road because I just couldn’t run along this path without crushing them – which of course I didn’t want to do.

Oh yeah – before I forget- I did finish my 6 Miler even tough I can’t stand running in the rain – but at least I got it done!

Do you notice the little black flies on my forehead in the pic?
They always come out when it’s really hot and humid. Sometimes I’m covered!

 

They stick in my eyes and I’m not sure how many I have swallowed in the last 2 years.
What can I say? Happy Florida Running:)
I bet most of you guys don’t have to deal with this issue on your run!

 

Tuesday: Playtime with my kids for most of the day. Yeah – no running needed after that – I was finished!

Wednesday: 4 miles early in the morning around my neighborhood. It was hot and humid already very early on – a typical August morning in South Florida. It was a drag getting through this long and steamy run. Lizard catching with my kids later on seemed a lot easier.

Thursday: 6 miles night run. Not running was not option today. I couldn’t wait for Jim to get home so I can go out for a run. I can think and plan so well when I’m running – it clears my head. During a lot of my runs I finally have the time to really think about what needs to be done next. I make mental notes of my ideas and plans and hopefully I still remember these notes and ideas when I get home – then I write them down to my to-do list.

Running does so much more than just keeping you in shape. It really helps your creative thinking. A few  years ago I read that scientists have found that running has the same effect on the brain as meditation. That explains the calmness after a run.

 

Friday: 3 miles outside early morning. Slow and easy morning run.

Saturday: No running. I have no idea though how many Pokemon steps I took that day. A lot! Including looking for Pokemon along the beach!  My little John just loves it! Huge Pokemon fan!

Sunday: I don’t think I had a weekend in like 2 years when I didn’t go for a run. This was one of them though. Jim was working all weekend and there was just time to fit in a run for me. I could have ran late at night but after spending the day on the beach with the sun blasting on me I just couldn’t find an ounce of energy in my system to drag myself out for a run.

It was a fun weekend though. The boys definitely keep me active no matter what.

Total mileage for this week: 19 miles. My lowest weekly mileage in 2 years, which is totally fine. I’ll pick it up next week again!:)
