My Running Log Week August 22nd – August is almost over! How is this possible?
Here in Palm Beach I’m still running in really hot, hazy and humid conditions – this will most likely not change for a few more weeks. There seems to be some relief really late at night right now though – feels good to run with a breeze around you. Even early mornings can be really humid right now.
One thing I have noticed is that my energy levels have been pretty good throughout this year’s Summer running. I believe it is contributed by replacing most of what used to be my refined sugar intake with with dates, coconut sugar, maple syrup and raw honey.
I feel I have less sugar crashes in the afternoon and therefore more energy during the day and during my runs.
I always read how your running stamina improves when you cut back on processed and refined sugar – I just never knew how to really apply it my own afternoon and late night cravings. Replacing most of my refined sugar with unrefined sugar really gives me much better results in my stamina levels – even when running in 86 degrees. I think the coconut oil is another huge positive contributor.
Anyway – this is what I have been observing about my running for the past year.
It really all comes down to “you are what you eat“.
Here is how my running went this week:
Monday: 4 miles at night around our community. I wanted to round it up to 6 miles, but the air was way too hot and steamy.
Tuesday: no running
Wednesday: It was very stormy outside so I headed for 6 Miles on the treadmill at my gym. Plus 1000 m of rowing, ab work and lots of foam rolling.
Thursday: Same thing like yesterday. Still stormy weather. I thought the treadmill was a much better and safer option. 6 miles, plus 1000 m rowing.
Friday: 3 miles early in the morning. I needed to get back fast to bring my kids to school. In the afternoon we headed to the local park for some exercise, running on the track and some Yoga.
My 3 year old son David took pics of me and John in our Yoga poses – it was so fun! Isn’t he a good photographer?
Over the Summer they have really started to like Yoga which is really surprising to me because they both are such energy balls!
Saturday: I woke up this morning and really felt like running a long run. Jim was off so I grabbed the opportunity to head outside for a nice 10 Miler. It was raining earlier so I waited until it cleared up to run. After I hit the road the rain came back in Mile 2. Hard and heavy out of the blue.
At this point I was already too far from home anyway so I kept on running in heavy down pour.
(I was so worried about my phone getting wet. Days earlier Jim lost his phone because John dropped it in the toilet by accident. I thought for sure I was the next candidate in the family with no phone due to water damage.)
I kept on running – I really had no other choice anyway.
I just thought as long as I can sort of see what’s in front of me I’ll be fine. I had to run like this for 2 miles and another 2 miles in a bit less heavy rain – let me tell you it wasn’t much fun.
The sun started breaking from towards the ocean so I kept running hoping it would clear up soon. It did. But it only took about 15 minutes when hazy sun broke again and I was back to running in hot and super humid conditions.
Even though I was soaking wet and drenched only a few minutes earlier I was all dried up moments later. I continued running along Ocean Drive.
I love running along Juno Beach – but one thing is really bothers me along this course. Why don’t they have any vendors along the beach for miles on end?
I felt so dehydrated and would have needed some sort of electrolytes.
You really envy the tourists with their rolling coolers heading towards the beach with their ice cold drinks.
(I always think if it gets bad enough somebody will spare an ice cold water with a dehydrated poor runner. You just need the guts to ask…)
Anyway, I was happy when this run was done. So happy! I was finished for the rest oft the day – the sun really burnt be out. 10 miles for today.
Btw – my phone was fine, but my new running headphones were not.
Sunday: No Running but 60 minutes of Yoga at my gym. I took the kids to the waterfront to play some basketball and frisbee. Nice casual Summer afternoon.
Total Mileage for this week: 29 miles plus Yoga and Rowing.
How was your week?
