Running Log Week August 1st – Half-Marathon Training.

August already! How can this be? This year is running by in full speed and I can barely catch up.

This last week has been pretty mellow for me running wise. A) the heat put a real damper on my running and B) my sciatica nerve pain has been acting up a bit again, so I followed my doctor’s advice and took it a bit easier so I don’t put too much strain on my leg.

In addition, over the weekend I have been icing and stretching again, so hopefully this inflammation will pass soon again. In addition I sprained my right foot Monday morning during my run when I was running up the sidewalk. I missed the edge of the sidewalk a tiny bit and slipped off. It was really painful for a moment but it passed quickly and I was able to continue running for another 3 miles. It actually felt pretty much fine afterwards.

During the early evening hours however when I was preparing dinner, all of a sudden my foot was in so much pain. I could literally watch it swelling up. I iced it but I knew that I needed some sort of topical ointment or gel that speeds up the healing process. I jumped in the car and drove over to Whole Foods. For the first time in all these years running I purchased Traumeel Gel. I have read about it for years in Runner’s Magazine, but for some reason I was always an Arnica Montana fan and never gave Traumeel a try. This sprain felt so bad though that I thought I might need something stronger. So I went with the Traumeel ointment. I put it on when I went to sleep and when I woke up my swelling was 90% down. This gel really worked wonders and I thought that it would be a great idea to share my experience with other runners. I still love Arnica, too, but Traumeel is also a favorite one of mine now. It worked great!

I have had a lot of early morning runs this week. All throughout the past weeks I have been running mainly at night, but Jim’s schedule changed again so here I am running early in the mornings again. It really does feel good to get your workout done early in the morning. Therefore it’s done and you don’t have to worry about it anymore for the rest oft he day. The only thing is it really isn’t that much cooler in the mornings right now compared to night time. At least at night you get a tiny bit of a breeze, whereas in the early morning the humidity already feels really sticky and thick. Enough complaining though – we all know Summer running is hard.

Running Log Week August 1st

Monday: 5 Miles done. The first mile felt really hard as usual. It almost sucked all my energy from me but something happened after that 1st mile and my energy kicked in. I was able to finish 5 miles at 9:04 m/pm. I was so happy about my pace in this crazy heat and humidity. Always feels good to get Monday runs out of the way. Yippee!

Weekly Running Log August 1st

 

Tuesday: 6 miles on the treadmill at my gym. It was too hot to run outside and I opted for a treadmill run. I remember in Mile 3 or so when the run became really long and a bit hard the new Skechers commercial with Meb Keflezighi came on. Let me tell you, watching his stride and posture put the spring right back into my boring run. For about 30 seconds I wanted to run like Meb … even if only in my dreams. 🙂 The worst part about running on a treadmill for me though is leaving the gym and getting to sit in a car. Sitting down after running 6 miles just hurts. That’s what I loved about NYC so much. After running on the treadmill at my gym I still had to walk 2 miles back to my house afterwards. Walking really helps loosening up your muscles after a run.

Wednesday: no running I felt my sciatica acting up and decided not to go running

Thursday: 3 miles in the morning around my neighborhood. Hot and sweaty 3 Miler.

Friday: 5 Miles It was still in the morning but it was already 88 degrees. I finished at 5 miles even though I always try to push for 6 miles, but it was just not happening. This weeks was just sooo hot. Every mile was at maximum effort for me. It felt so great when it was done though.

 

Running Log Week August 1st

 

Saturday: No running.

Sunday: 1.5 hours Yoga Flow. This calls feels absolutely amazing. These 90 minutes always fly by so fast. Afterwards I hit the treadmill for 3 miles.

 

Total Mileage for this week: 22 miles
