Raw Hot Chocolate is a favorite hot drink of mine during the colder winter months. I especially love it during the afternoon, when most of the time it is too late for me to go for another cup of coffee. Hot Chocolate actually has a mild stimulating effect, but without shaking up your nervous system before you go to sleep.
I love preparing my Hot Chocolate with Raw Cacao Powder. Raw Cacao Powder is much more nutrient dense than regular cocoa, and is packed with the good stuff that benefits every function of the body. Most people think that cacao and cocoa are the same, but they are actually not. I have to admit that these two terms are a bit confusing. You really need to pay attention to the spelling in order not to confuse the two.
To sum it all up in short, cocoa is the processed product of cacao. That’s why cocoa is much less nutritious than raw cacao. Most of the good nutrients are lost during refinement. Besides the nutrient dense energy boost, Raw Cacao delivers a healthy dose of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, even copper, magnesium and iron, plus enzymes! It’s also a great recovery drink after a strenuous workout and a soothing drink at the end of the day.
Here is my go-to Raw and Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe:
Research has shown that dairy actually prevents the absorption of antioxidants in Raw cocoa. That’s one of the reasons why I drink my Hot Chocolate only with unsweetened Almond Milk (besides the fact that I like the way it tastes and feels).
2 cups Vanilla Unsweetened Almond Milk ( I prefer the Trader Joe’s Brand because it is carrageenan-free) or any other non-dairy milk of your choice
2 heaping tsp Raw Cocoa Powder
2 tsp 100% pure Maple Syrup
- pour almond milk in a saucepan and heat shortly until warm, not hot!
- add raw cacao and whisk until dissolved
- add maple syrup
- Because it’s Yum and So Good for You!
