I love the bohemian style of doilie crafts! A DIY doilie bowl and votive candle holder in your home decor create a light and airy flower-child-like mood. I always think of doilies as classic and timeless decor pieces. I love the crochet style handmade varieties as well as the paper kind. There are so many beautifully patterned doilies, it’s hard to pick a favorite. It really depends on the pattern you personally prefer.
If you are not a crochet artist, you can pick up fabric doilies at your local craft store or order them online here. When you order them online they usually come in packs of 3 or 5, which is also pretty helpful, because once you start making one doilie bowl you might want to make a few more. Handmade DIY doilie bowls make beautiful gifts for the holidays, they beautify your home decor or serve as an organizer on your desk. I personally love storing pins, magnets and all things little inside them.
DIY Doilie Bowls are really easy to make. They don’t require much effort and look absolutely gorgeous!
The hardest part about the entire craft is the waiting time of 24 – 30 hours for the glue to dry!
What you need:
doilies 1 or more
a bowl or cup that fits the size of your doilie
a container/bowl for soaking your doilie
for the votive:
a glass or votive holder
In a plastic container add fabric stiffener.
Soak your doile in the fabric stiffener, make sure doilie is entirely drenched in glue.
Squeeze doilie to remove excess glue
place doilie over bowl, make sure it’s all nicely covered around the bowl
let doilie covered bowl dry for at least 24 hours. I sometimes even leave them 30 hours.
Gently remove stiffened doilie fabric from the bowl.
If you like flip edges of the doilie over for a more blooming effect or leave it straight. Whatever you prefer:)
The result is a really solid fabric bowl
For the votive holder follow all steps, using a glass instead of the bowl. Do not remove doilie fabric of the glass!
Tip: Cover the area underneath the bowl with paper or paper towels to protect it from dripping glue
